What Does the Bible Have to Say About Effective Leadership (Part 5)

In the 5th installment we are going to look at " An Effective Leader Confronts with Authority."

I hate confrontation. I used to do anything to get out of it, but I have learned, if I want to be an effective leader, especially leading a Church movement, I have to be willing to confront. Hopefully, this will help you as well. These leadership principles are taken out of our manuals we use for our leadership development classes called NorthwestPassage.

The Effective Leader Confronts with Authority

Whenever God encourages His people to do something to expand the Kingdom, it seems like the potential for conflict follows behind. The leader is responsible for helping to maintain the unity and connectedness of those being led, and so chaos, conflict and evil must be confronted in the authority of the Spirit.

In Titus 2:15, Paul challenges the young pastor to "Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one look down on you."

Paul wanted Titus to be bold in confronting sin. And we are called to do that, if we are called to leadership. But to clairify, this does not mean that you as a leader have the right to equate, "opposition to the vision" with "evil." We need to be appropriately humble about the vision we believe God has given us, to be open to guidance from those who are wise, to make appropriate amount of room for those who might disagree with us.

Does this mean that we should doubt the direction we believe we are receiving from God every time someone disagrees with us? Of course not. But we must realize that disagreement is not the same thing as sin. That being said, once people move from simply disagreeing to gossiping, quareling, and causing great pain to others in their quest to "be heard," we will need to be ready to confront and, in doing so, properly care for those whom God has given us responsibility.

What Does the Bible Have to Say About Effective Leadership (Part 4)

In the fourth installment we are going to look at " An Effective Leader Provides Direction." We are just getting ready to launch another year of NW Passage. This has been one of the most beneficial things we've done for Whipple Creek and for the individuals. The 9 month process has helped each person learn more of who God is, who they are and what God wants to do in and through them.

We challenge with questions and statements. One of the things we look at is Christian leadership in the Church. Here is our fourth statement. Do you agree?

The Effective Leader Provides Direction

The effective leader is the sort of person who, guided by faith, uses goals and strategies to chart a course of action. Effective leaders help their people find methods to accomplish the vision, which they believe God has given to them. Jethro illustrated this principle in Exodus 18:14-23 when he advised his son-in-law, Moses to delegate some of his authority to others and focus on the sorts of issues that only he could address (and boy am I learning this one!).

Jethro recognized the need and then outlined a strategy that would allow Moses to be faithful to his God-given responsibilities. The capacity to offer this sort of guidance is a skill that must be developed. If wise action is to be linked to good vision, then strategy must be developed.

NEXT UP: Part 5: The Effective Leader Confronts with Authority.

A Letter to Whipple Creek Church

I wanted to share with you a letter that was sent out to our church today.
Brett

Sabbatical Letter
To the Church of Whipple Creek
July 2011

Dear Church,

It’s hard to believe it was 10 years ago, that I, along with a dedicated group of people, about 20 or so of us, started Whipple Creek. We knew that God wanted to do something different in Vancouver, and that He wanted to use Real People who were living Real Lives to give people who were far from God Real Hope, what God intended the Real Church to be. And YOU are now a part of that journey.

Much has happened in the last 10 years, and I know God has much more for us in the next 10! The 10 years have been filled with blessing, hurts, joys, surprises, miracles, sadness, a lot of spiritual battle and a lot of God-things! But it has all been worth it.

With that said, I want to be ready for the next 10 years, knowing God has new challenges ahead for me and for Whipple. I want to be ready for it and be refreshed and renewed to lead the charge that God has entrusted me with and called me to do.  With the encouragement of wise counsel, I have decided to take a sabbatical this year. Sabbaticals are typically taken every 7th year in the life of a pastor. Sabbaticals can last anywhere from one month to a full year. This season will be a time of renewal, refocus and rest.

The “Sabbatical” idea is based on a Sabbath day of rest. Its purpose is for pastors to strengthen relationships with Christ and family and then to return to ministry refreshed, recharged and renewed.  When pastors are refreshed, recharged and renewed, so is the church.  My hope is that you’ll be supportive of my decision to take a sabbatical this fall.  Please join me in asking the Lord to make this time valuable for both my family and our church.

I enjoy ministry and am enthusiastic about the future of Whipple, though there is an undeniable sense of weightiness and a spiritual battle that simply goes with the territory. Those who know me best will agree that this Sabbatical is well-timed.  Our family will be distributing prayer cards, much like missionaries give out, so that you will know how you can be praying for us. We would be grateful for all your prayers for us.

I will be away from Whipple Creek from September 6th until November 27th. I'm happy to say that we have an incredible staff that will be sharing the responsibilities and leading the charge at Whipple during this time.  You’ll be receiving more emails, newsletters and letters from them in the month of August.

As far as the preaching/teaching goes, there will be several different people filling in as guest speakers, but you will know most of them, and they are men who I trust a great deal and who all love Whipple and its people. I know you'll be encouraging and supportive of them, just as you are to me - thank you!

To maximize this sabbatical rest, I've broken the time up into two general sections.  The first will be a time of Rest and Recovery.  I'll take the first part to simply catch my breath, spend some time with my bride and family.

This will be followed by a time of Reflection and Realignment. In the process, I want to meet with pastors and church leaders across the country who have inspired me, advised me and become good friends. My family and I want to see how we can bless these servants.

I'll be updating my blog at www.brettaljets.com on a regular basis if you would like to follow us on our journey as I process things “out-loud.”

In the coming weeks, you’ll be hearing who is taking care of what, so that you’ll know “who” to contact with questions or concerns. I believe this is going to be an awesome time for Whipple as we all step out in faith and step-up and into “owning” our Church. I believe this is the direction God has for us and the direction we need to go, in order to make us the Church that God has planned for us for the future.

In the meantime, if you have questions, comments, or concerns, please email me, text me, Facebook me, heck you can even talk to me or call me!

It's a privilege to serve together with you, and as your pastor, and I'm thankful for the terrific staff, elders and ministry teams around me.  I look forward to returning with a renewed vision of how Great God truly is, and a fresh understanding of how I might best serve Him at Whipple. I truly believe, the best for all of us is yet to come!

In His Grip,
Brett

(For those who I've been friends with via social networking, if we are in you neck of the woods, I'd love to see you!)

Easter Passion Week

God is doing some amazing things here at Whipple Creek and in Clark County! We are very excited this week as we prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter. Here are somethings we'll be doing to engage our community. If you are in Vancouver, feel free to jump in. If you aren't in our vicinity, we ask that you pray for us as we try to make Jesus famous for the right reasons in Clark County.

We will be living streaming the Passion Reading starting at 9:00am Wednesday morning continuing until it has been completly read.

Monday: 6pm-9:00pm Upper Room open for Prayer. You can have private prayer time with God or have someone prayer with you. Prayer intercessors will be available. The Upper Room will be open and available anytime the church is open.

Tuesday: 7:00pm-8:00pm The Evidence for the Resurrection  class being taught by Jim Huntamer in the auditorium.

Wednesday: 9:00am The Passion reading begins.

6:00pm  Upper Room open for Prayer. You can have private prayer time with God or have someone prayer with you. Prayer intercessors will be available. The Upper Room will be open and available anytime the church is open.

Thursday: 7:00pm We will gather at the church and form small teams to walk through our community praying for the spiritual, social, and physical welfare of our neighbors. We will end our prayer walk by sharing communion in the Upper Room.

Friday: 7:00pm Passion of the Christ: We will be showing "The Passion of the Christ" in the auditorium with a discussion afterwards for those who would like to stay. The movie is rated "R" for intense violence.

Saturday 9:00am-2:00pm Work day! We will be preparing the buildining and grounds for our Easter Services. Weed to your hearts delight; wield a power washer; hunt for cobwebs; touch up painting; windows washed; fun for everyone!

I pray you Easter is blessed and fulfilling to you and those you come in contact with during the week.

Turn "Me" into "We"

ReaLife Communities
 It’s about:
         Community
         Neighborhoods
         Resources
         Training
         Mentoring
         Restoration
         Redistribution

The Story:
In my neighborhood, I learned over the last two years there are homeless families. I learned there are families that are hungry & don't have money for food. I learned that middle school girls are subjected into forced prostitution by teenage boys.

Were do I live? Not LA, not New York not Chicago or the Philippines or some third world country. I live in Vancouver, Washington. Yes, it's happening in my neighborhood, but I can't do anything about it. I need “you” to help “me” become
‘WE.”

We can end homelessness in our Community. We can end hunger in our Community. We can end sexual trafficking, yes, in OUR Community. We are better together than We are alone.

These issues are a reality in Vancouver and in particular in our own Hazel Dell Community. But we can do something about it.

A two-year dream is about to become reality. Many organizations, non-profits, and churches are coming together to unite as one to make a difference in Clark County: Real Life in Hazel Dell.

Here’s how you can help:

We can do this! Pass this link on to others and share it in your network! Be apart of making a difference .

Mondering Pondering

As I'm in my office pondering the future for us, several questions flood through my mind about the kind of church we are and we want to be and who God is leading us to be--and more importantly how do we reach people? I guess you could ask it like this, how do we continue to be an engaging church that is embedded our community?
Who are the seekers and spectators and that we're hoping to engage? The 1st generation of the 21st Century is far different than any before. It's a group that has made more personal lifestyle changes than any other--due almost entireley to the advances in technology. And it's a group that has options.
We're calling to a culuture that devours makeover shows and to people who know "pimp my ride" means to make their vehicle as cool as possible. We're asking adults to give up time they could be spending in front of their 60" plasma screens, and we're asking their kids to lay down their video games, iPods, and iPhones, Xboxs, their technology to connect with us, and we with them.
But what do we offer? Remarkable experiences and initiatives that keep up and surpass those of our culture? How do we meet the needs of people with ever-shortening attention spans and ever-increasing expectations? How do we do all that and still keep our ministry focus and avoid feeding a "church mall" mindset? What is the best ways for us to meet the needs of our community? Can we do it alone? How is the model of the church need to change to meet those needs? Will other churches partner with us to make it happen?
Just some things I'm pondering as I seek God to take us where He bodly will in 2010 and 2011.

Dream Year, You Killing Me.

I've always known God has given us dreams that only we can accomplish. I've known in order to accomplish those dreams there is a cost. Also, it takes guts, hard work, trust, and faith to accomplish that dream.

BUT I've learning new things along this Dream Year Journey: When God awakens that dream, when we gather others to that dream, that dream becomes a reality (not a new thought, but more realized now). God has been and continues to be involved in that dream long before we got involved.

I've learned that the dream, if it is a God-given dream, isn't just for us. Often, God has people, a movement if you will, in place to accomplish that dream. Sometimes, He may just use us as the catalyst for the dream to become real. And maybe, in the end for that dream to become a reality, we have to hand it off to someone else to accomplish it.

I guess my question is, are we (more specifically, am I) willing to hand over and entrust that dream which has been birthed in me to someone else in order to see it come to be?

Maybe once I have that figured out, I've learned what I've needed to learn from the Dream Year and maybe need to start asking, "What's next?"

What I'm Doing Over the Next 12 (11) Months.

All About Dream Year

Dreamlogo_low
Dream Year is a 12-month process that's designed to help you bring your God-given dream to life.
You bring the dream.
I'll be your dream coach.
As a community of just 20 participants...
We'll make it happen.
We won't meet in person (so no travel required), but we'll collaborate on-line through video chats, practical lessons each week, monthly phone calls, and Google Wave. You'll occasionally get free resources in the mail and private conversations with notable leaders.
So that's...
  1. One exclusive lesson from me each week.
  2. One 40 minute phone call with me each month.
  3. On-line collaboration with a rotating team of 4.
  4. Occasional on-line video chats.
  5. Occasional free books.
  6. Free admission to my 2010 events.
  7. A personalized plan for executing your dream.
While you go about executing your project, we'll walk through a 12-month curriculum that looks something like this...
January - Authenticating your dream (tracing its history, assessing your readiness, testing the idea, defining a clear project, raising your faith level, preparing for risk)
February - Building your platform (moving from beggar to influencer, finding your audience, trading value for information, becoming an expert in your field)
March - Defining your values (determining what you won't do, then determining what you will do, on the subject of excellence, building a team to bring your idea to life)
April - Funding your dream (great ideas are spreadsheets with skin on, identifying revenue sources, shaping your strategy, cash flow is everything, the art of making the ask)
May - Branding your project (developing a total user experience, a field guide to designers, developing a creative class around you, design as the foundation for what you do)
June - Creating milestones (working backward from the goal, productivity tools, the sacrificial substitution principle, how faith changes the order of action, )
July - Leveraging influence (if you don't have influence you borrow it, if you already have influence you still borrow it, creating social movements around your idea, networking with leaders who matter)
August - Partnerships (creating win-wins, the art of negotiation, rooting out great partnerships, angles of benefit, value exchanges, approaching partners)
September - Rainmaking (sales for people who hate sales, how to put yourself out there without losing dignity, systems that produce revenue, closing deals, invoicing, merchant gateways)
October - Shaping an organization (organizational systems, proprietary versus outsourced, contractors versus employees, legal issues, how to make your idea your living, etc.)
November - Positioning yourself (navigating the world of media, agents, publishers, and conference makers, marketing in an over-saturated field, differentiation)
December - Last-month epiphanies, unresolved issues, feedback and last minute-ideas, charting the future connectivity of the class of 2010
There will be monthly assignments that will help you work toward your dream. But you'll benefit from the influence, connections, resources, talents, and ideas of all of the participants. Each year will produce its own class of graduates... a fraternity if you will. A skull and bones of the Christian world. =)
Here are some of the advantages of Dream Year.
- You'll get a personal dream coach in me.
- You'll get practical guidance on executing your idea.
- You'll get encouraging but constructive feedback.
- You'll help shape and fulfill the dreams of others.
- You'll get caring accountability.
- You'll get private sessions with notable thought-leaders.
- You'll get occasional free books from publishers.
- You'll end up with stronger network of culture-makers across the country.
- You'll get the connections, resources and talents of an amazing group of leaders.
- Free admission to STORY and The Whiteboard Sessions during 2010.
- Membership to the exclusive Dream Year class of 2010.
- Oh... and how about YOUR DREAM COMING TO LIFE?! =)

Fasting & Prayer Can Change Your LIfe

There are a few things that God wants to do in your life......but you must be prepared, you must pause. Are you in alignment with Heaven's blueprint for your life? Are you in the right assignment to walk out God's purpose? Is God's transforming power at work in your life? As a Church we need to ask ourselves the same questions. WE need to seek his purposes for us as a whole as well, and what better time than the beginning of a new year.

We are going to learn the answers to these questions and more. Prepare your heart to discover the true purpose of fasting and the power of prayer.

iPause, is a month long journey in experiencing what God has for us individually and as a Church as we pause together, not only to learn about fasting and prayer but to actually do it through the month of January. It's all about creating a culture of prayer and fasting for us to have the best of what God wants for us.

Looking forward to this January in seeing God showing up!

In His Grip,

Brett

Sunday, December 20th at Whipple Creek Church

The Third Week of the Advent Conspiracy is all about:
A Conspiracy of Knowing Love
Special Guest: John Sowers (The Mentoring Project)

[Know Completely]
Knowledge is power. God knows us perfectly. God knows what somebody has been angry about all week. God knows all those little digs in conversation that sound a little funny but we really meant seriously. God knows about the commitments we made, that we left undone and that left somebody in a lurch. God knows about people who drink too much, and kid themselves into saying they don’t.  God knows all about our masks and our disguises. God knows us perfectly. God knows us completely.

Join us as we get to hear from Dr. John Sowers, of The Mentoring Project, and how his unique story of "knowing love" connects in with The Conspiracy of Knowing Love, the Story of Christmas. You'll also have the opportunity to show love by way of the "The Mentoring Project Christmas Campaign" to help mentor the fatherless.

Sunday, December 13th at Whipple Creek Church

The Advent Conspiracy Continues with:
A Conspiracy of Living Love
Special Guest: Dan Merchant (Lord Save Us From Your Followers)

[Love All]
When Jesus loved, He loved in ways never imagined. Though rich, he became poor to love the poor, the forgotten, the overlooked and the sick. He played to the margins. By spending less at Christmas we have the opportunity to join Him in giving resources to those who need help the most. When Advent Conspiracy first began, four churches challenged this simple concept to their congregations. The result raised more than a half million dollars to aid those in need. One less gift. One unbelievable present in the name of Christ.

Dan, through his book and movie, Lord Save Us From Your Followers, and his lifestyle, embodies what it means to Love All. He is a genuine guy who desires to show Jesus love by how he lives his life and treats others. I can't wait for you to meet this new friend. In the meantime, you can check out his website by clicking HERE. Join us this Sunday at 10:30 am.

Here is the trailer for the movie, in case you haven't seen it yet!

Sunday, December 6th at Whipple Creek Church

A Conspiracy of Giving Love
Special Guest: Greg Russinger (Founder of Just4One.org)
[Give More]
God’s gift to us was a relationship built on love. So it’s no wonder why we’re drawn to the idea that Christmas should be a time to love our friends and family in the most memorable ways possible. Time is the real gift Christmas offers us, and no matter how hard we look, it can’t be found at the mall. Time to make a gift that turns into the next family heirloom. Time to write mom a letter. Time to take the kids sledding. Time to bake really good cookies and sing really bad Christmas carols. Time to make love visible through relational giving. Sounds a lot better than getting a sweater two sizes too big, right?

Check out Greg's organization here: JustOne

During the month of December, we are collecting quarters for the Laundry Love Project.

What is a Laundry Love Project?
Laundry Love Projects (LLPs) are regular opportunities to help people who are struggling financially by assisting them with doing their laundry. Relationships are built, and LLPs become small communities of common concern in which participants often find that they receive assistance and benefit with other areas of their lives.

Check out their video & then join us this Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

What Does The Bible Say About Effective Leadership (part 2)?

Sorry this post has been so long in coming, I guess you could say I got sidetracked by life a little bit. It's all been apart of me being a more effective leader. I lead a group of emerging leaders through a real cool process this past year (my 5th year doing it). I'm proud to say, leaders have emerged from that process who are now leading another 15 leaders through the same process (duplication, I love it!)

One of the things we always address is "What does the Bible say about leadership?" So, here is the 2nd thing (out of 10) the Bible says about effective leadership (that is a leaders who leads Christianly) that comes from what we are studying and reading (thanks VantagePoint3).
Do you agree?

The effective Christian leaders sees the way to go.

An effective leader is said the sort of person who inspires and motivates others toward a Godly vision. Look what Jesus in John 10:3-4,

"The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice."

Jesus was speaking about himself in this passage, but the responsibilities of a Christian leader are no different in that all Godly leaders are called to "know the sheep" in order to communicate a vision (a preferred view of the future), which in turn inspires follower-ship.

People are hungry for leadership, and because of this we are easily manipulated. Many worldly leaders take advantage of this susceptibility for their own profit, but Godly leaders always call their followers to a vision that glorifies God. They see God's way to go.

NEXT: Effective Christian leader proclaims truth.

Why Christian didn't drive a motorcycle while in the U.S.

This is Christian Jung. He is our missionary to Africa (right now in Mozambique). These are the roads they drive while getting the Word out about Jesus. Jesse Gellatly (one of our other missionaries to Mozambique) is filming him.

faithbook

We started a new series last week at Whipple entitled "faithbook." Yea, it's kind of facebook with a lisp. After reading some of Barna's research and talking to some of our people and then talking to other Christ-followers, it quickly become apparent to me how Biblically iliterate we are as a Christian society.

So, we started as series to get people to stop neglecting God's Word and to start engaging in it. This Sunday we are talking about how accurate is the Bible, inspiration and all those things we are taught in cementary, I mean seminary. I ran across this video clip at Worship House Media. I kind of like and though I would share it on my blog. Enjoy.

Is Your Heart Ready?

Can I say, I'm frustrated? This is Easter week, Holy week-there should be a sense of contentment, quietness, peacefulness but it's not. It seems every where I turn, there are problems. Personal, staff, friendships, and "things" happening in the church. I get frustrated because we make plans as a church to "change the world" (or at least our part of it), and when it comes time for the execution of it, it all falls apart. I think the "church" gets it, but then I see they don't. I'm frustrated. Isn't this supposed to be easier? Isn't this suppose to be the greatest week of the year for a Christian? Isn't this supposed to be a time of celebration, and telling others, and showing others what Christ did for us? Shouldn't the Church get it, especially the staff or those that are the forerunners in the church at least, shouldn't they at least get it?

I have to think, "how frustrated was Jesus?" Now, I'm not comparing myself to Him by any means. I'm far from that. But here is the Son of Man, God in the flesh, the Savior of the world who spent three years living on this earth ministering, investing into people, doing many miraculous things, and about getting ready to die a horrible death & the people He invested in the most, the people He spent most of his time with in those three years, the guys He lived with, didn't get it.

They fought over who should be first; they had doubts; they had wrong motives; they fell asleep when He asked them to pray for Him - one even betrayed Him. If that happened to Jesus, why shouldn't I expect the same. Heck, I don't live with people I do ministry with (although sometimes I feel like it).

For me, and maybe for you, it comes down to this: we have a real enemy who wants to frustrate us and make us feel defeated. Yes, I'm frustrated, but I'm frustrated because I don't understand Jesus enough. Why would He still go to the cross when it seemed, to me, that people didn't get it? Simple--Jesus came into this world because He loved us so much that He was willing to die for us to save us from the evil one.

My question for you is: Is Your Heart Ready for Easter? We may not get it all, but we do need to get Him!

If you're in the Vancouver area and don't have a church home, join us for Easter & baptisms this Sunday at 8:30 & 10:30. I love our baptisms. We usually know of one or two people being baptized, but by the time we're done, many, many more come forward in their clothes and all to be baptized! It's exciting!

Wherever you attend this weekend, my prayer is that your heart is prepared for the One who didn't let frustration keep Him from doing what He needed to do.

In His Grip,

Brett

We are all beggars!

What an incredible, painful, joyful, tearful and heartfelt last couple of Sunday's we've had at Whipple. I've been talking about what it means to be dangerous (a good dangerous) as a Church and that it takes people to become dangerous disciples to make it happen. (After all isn't the Church really just people and not the building? Remember "here's the church, here's the steeple, open the door, see all the people"?)

One of the things I've been trying to drive home is how important our stories are in touching people and how they become a gateway to the bigger story. (God's epic story through time of His love reconciling people to Him.) I've said it like this, we are all beggars telling another beggar where to get food (think I got that from Andy Stanley or Ed Young). Each week I shared a simple story, a beggars story, a "cardboard testimony" of how God has changed someone's life.

I talked about "Story" and how the human condition, how the marginalized, the outcast, the forgotten, the one's we chose to ignore, all have stories, too. I said that when our story (which is God's story) intersects with their story, God shows up, lives are changed, relationships get restored, and lives get healed.

People were invited to come forward and to write their cardboard testimony, their story, and place them at the front of church as an offering to God. I saw people come forward who I knew their story and how God had worked in & through their lives-I rejoiced & celebrated with them.

I saw people come forward that are in the middle of their story, and they are still unsure of the way the story looks-I cried with them.

I saw people come forward who want or need God to be a part of their story. Their story is one of pain, abandonment & grief-I prayed & grieved with them.

Throughout it all, God is working to restore & rebuild people back to Him. And it's not only happening at Whipple, it's happening all across the world. What's your Story. Please leave a comment as we can encourage one another.
